The TANAP contains mountain and high-mountain plants such as dwarf pine, pine woods and a wonderful flora. Rare animal species such as the eagle, bear, or marmot live here as well. The chamois is the symbol of Tatras. It is one of the most precious species, as it developed in isolation since the glacial age. This is the reason why it differs from its relatives living in the Alps or Apennines. Its protection is extremely strict because only 1000 animals survive at present.

The tallest mountain of Slovakia is one of the peaks of the High Tatras - Gerlachovský štít. Symbol of the country though is the mountain Kriváň. The Park contains more than 100 alpine lakes and several waterfalls. The biggest and deepest lake of the Tatras is the Veľké Hincovo pleso, while the one situated highest is the lake Modré pleso (2,192 metres above sea level). The most visited lakes are the Štrbské pleso and Popradské pleso.

The only cave open to public in the TANAP is the Belianska jaskyňa.

For the sake of security, the hiking paths in the high-mountain levels of the TANAP are closed from 1 November to 15 June. Visitors accompanied by mountain guides are allowed to divert or abandon officially marked hiking routes only between 16 June and  31 October.

The Museum of TANAP in Tatranská Lomnica founded in 1957 provides exhausting information about TANAP and its inhabitants. In fact, it is the best source of information before one visits the mountains, as it offers the natural and overall history of the place.

Among the best localities to choose for access to the TANAP is the town Poprad and the tourist resorts Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské pleso (the highest situated tourist resort). The mountain ranges of Západné Tatry - Roháče are best accessible from tourist centre Zuberec.

The exhibition also includes a small geological area and a memorial place dedicated to those who promoted and implemented the idea of (TANAP).

Gerlachovský štít peak (High Tatras).
The mountain hotel Sliezsky dom is the starting point for the trip to the tallest mountain of Slovakia - the Gerlachovský štít peak (2655 m). The route leads by the terrace-shaped Velická (dolina) valley, with a beautiful 15 m tall Velický vodopád waterfall. For its botanical diversity, the terrace above the Velický vodopád waterfall bears the name Kvetnica (The Flower Garden).
Unmarked path turns off at this place. It is the beginning of the ascent to the Gerlachovský štít peak over the Velická mountaineering route. The route called Batizovská descends to the valley Batizovská (dolina) valley.
The hikers interested in the ascent to the tallest peak of the Tatras must be aware that it is only possible in company of a professional mountain guide. Services of experienced guides are provided to visitors according to the price list of the Mountain Rescue Service of the Tatra National Park. Its seat is in Starý Smokovec.

Kriváň Mt. (High Tatras).
An exceptionally attractive trip is the ascent to the Kriváň Mt. (2494 m ) a stout peak in the western part of the High Tatras. This mountain is a multiple winner of enquiries about the most beautiful mountain in Slovakia. It is easily recognizable for its conspicuously curved summit, which is the reason why it is called Kriváň (in English Curved Mount).
As the mountain Kriváň is considered the symbol of the national pride, in the 19th century pilgrimages Slovak patriots and enthusiasts to the top of this mountain were organized. This tradition recently revived.
The most comfortable and quick way to reach the top of Kriváň starts at the point called Tri studničky. The first serpentines of the green-marked footpath bring tourists to a place called Grúnik, which witnessed some bitter fighting between the partisans and the Nazi troops at the end of the Second World War. The path goes on from Grúnik crossing the slope of the Priehyba Mt. to a steep trough covered by falling debris from the Kriváň.
The reward for a rather demanding ascent is a wonderful panoramic vista. The usual way back from the top of mount Kriváň is the one following the blue-marked path leading to the Jamské pleso lake. From there one can get either to Podbanské or to Štrbské Pleso.
